Termly Overviews
Your child will take part in lots of fun and exciting topics throughout the year. Our curriculum has been designed to be engaging, purposeful and to enable all of our children to achieve their very best.
Please find below, an overview of what your child will learn during each term.
Year 6 Curriculum Overview
Autumn Term
During the Autumn Term, our Year 6 children enjoy a rich and engaging curriculum designed to spark curiosity and creativity. In Science, they classify living things and explore the diversity of the natural world. In their Creative Curriculum lessons (History, Geography, Art and Design and Design Technology), they learn about the Shang Dynasty - discovering its culture, achievements and impact on early Chinese civilization. Religious Education focuses on key leaders and the values they promoted, while in French, the children develop their skills by learning to communicate actions. In Music, they explore jazz and swing discovering: rhythm, melody and style. In their PE lessons, the children take part in lessons at school whilst also visiting the local leisure centre for swimming, building both fitness and confidence in the water.
Spring Term
In the Spring term, our Year 6 children will continue to engage in our diverse and exciting curriculum. In Science, they will explore electricity and circuits, investigating how electrical systems work. During their Creative Curriculum lessons they will focus on the history and geography of North America, developing their understanding of its people, landscapes and culture. In Art and Design, the children will study graffiti artwork, while in Design Technology they will focus on construction: researching, designing, making and evaluating how to build a bridge. In Music, they will identify key features such as rhythm, tempo, timbre and structure by appraising familiar music. Their PSHE lessons will focus on accepting all members of the community and considering how to treat people fairly and Religious Education, they will evaluate what matters most to Christians and Humanists, reflecting on different beliefs and values.
For more in depth information, please visit the school website and click on the "Curriculum" tab. This will provide you with more information about what is taught in each subject.
Please do not hesitate to speak to one of the Year 6 team should you have any questions about our curriculum content.
Special Days
Throughout the year, our children take part in a variety of 'special days' that enrich their learning and celebrate important themes. These include events such as Genes for Jeans Day, Black History Month, NSPCC Number Day and Holocaust Awareness Day, as well as many others. In addition, our children benefit from a range of educational visits both in and out of school, giving them hands-on experiences that bring their learning to life and create lasting memories.
Behaviour and Rewards
Year 6 follow the whole school behaviour policy. As part of our rewards system, we have Field Road Bank. The Bank provides our children with the opportunity to earn coins to spend on a termly basis - tokens are awarded daily for attending school and for following our school values. Our Bank also promotes financial literacy, teaching our children the importance of money management and saving for the future.
Alongside this, we use the Class Dojo system as an 'in the moment' reward system. Children can acquire dojo's through positive behaviours such as kindness, showing a good attitude to learning or demonstrating our school values.
Children who receive dojo's can earn rewards and access to fun activities. In Year 6, the Dojo system rewards those children who demonstrate our school values consistently. This reward system resets each week.
So far this year, these activities have consisted of: milkshake making, extra playtime, donut day and gymnastics.
How you can help your child at home:
We value the support you provide your child in enhancing their learning. It is important that your child is given the opportunity to apply what they have learnt in a different environment in order for their knowledge and skills to become embedded.
You can support your child at home by:
- Listening to them read regularly. This can be their stage book, library book or any book at home. We ask that each child reads at least three times per week for a minimum of ten minutes and that their reading record is signed by an adult.
- Asking your child comprehension questions based on the text they have read.
- Getting your child to practise their times tables (TT Rockstars).
- Getting your child to practise their spellings. Every child has a spelling log with weekly spellings set. Children should use their logs to practise their spellings each day.
- Making sure your child completes their weekly homework on MyMaths. Homework is based on learning from the week.
- Exposing children to real life learning e.g. money, time, measurement.
