General Information

Homework

Every child will be given homework on a weekly basis. Homework will be set on MyMaths every Friday and will need to be completed by the following Friday.

The children will be set a list of spellings each week. These will be set on a Friday and the children will tested on these on the following Friday. Please practise these spellings for a minimum of three times per week in the children’s spelling logs.

The children will be given a reading book and library book. Children should read their reading book at home with an adult and a comment can be written into their reading log book. This will then be checked in school. Children will go to the school library every two weeks where they will be able to change their library books, as long as they have their current library book in school. The children will be taking part in our brand new ‘Starbooks Reading Challenge’. .

There will be an opportunity within school lunch time for children to complete their homework if they are unable to do so at home.

Speak to Miss Simmonds if your child needs their MyMaths login.

Autumn

Autumn 1 :

This term, Year 4 have been learning all about the Romans and the impact they had on Britain. The children explored who the Romans were, where they came from and why they invaded Britain. They learned about Roman soldiers, including their armour, weapons, battle formations and discovered what life was like in the Roman army.

The children also studied everyday Roman life, comparing Roman homes, food, entertainment and schools with life today. They investigated Roman roads, towns and inventions, understanding how these helped the Romans control their empire and how some are still used today.

Throughout the topic, pupils developed their historical skills by using timelines, asking questions about the past, and examining sources of evidence. They particularly enjoyed creating their own Roman myths and gladiators and even designing and making their own Roman chariot!

Autumn 2:

Year 4 have been exploring the topic Frozen Kingdom, learning about cold places around the world, with a focus on the Arctic and Antarctic. The children located these regions on maps and globes and learned about their climate, weather patterns and physical features such as glaciers, icebergs, and tundra.

They studied the animals that live in cold environments, discovering how species such as polar bears, penguins and seals are adapted to survive freezing temperatures. The children also learned about the people who live and have explored in polar regions.

As part of the topic, pupils explored the effects of climate change on frozen environments and discussed why these regions are important to protect. Throughout the unit, they developed their geographical skills by using maps, atlases and data to compare cold regions with warmer parts of the world.

Spring

 Spring 1:

This spring term, Year 4 will be exploring the exciting and vibrant topic of Rainforests. Pupils will learn about the world’s tropical rainforests, discovering where they are located and why they are so important to our planet. We will explore the different layers of the rainforest and learn about the amazing plants and animals that live there.

Through engaging lessons across the curriculum, children will develop their geographical skills by using maps, comparing climates and understanding how rainforests support life. We will also consider the impact humans have on rainforests and why it is important to protect these unique environments.

The topic will inspire creative writing, artwork and discussion, helping children to deepen their understanding while developing curiosity and a sense of responsibility for the world around them.
